Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is held each year on November 20 to memorialize and honour the many trans lives lost during the past year due to gender-based violence. Our event this year was to bring attention to Trans Day of Remembrance to the wider student body at the universities and LGBTIQ+ community at large by having an awareness march to set the tone and awaken service providers and politicians about the protection of transgender rights.
We also had a community-based art installation in SUB, and at the pride center of Edmonton for folks in the community, students at the University of Alberta to reflect on and the opportunity to leave the names of lost loved ones and messages of affirmation to the community. This years’ TDoR was held at the Pride Center Edmonton and it saw over 300 community members take part with wider coverage in the press and online impressions. Thanks to the International Trans Fund!
